In the account found in 2 Chronicles 20, we learn of three armies that advanced against King Jehoshaphat with the intent to engage in battle. Upon receiving news of this impending threat, Jehoshaphat was alarmed by the multitude approaching him. In response, he sought guidance from the Lord and declared a fast for his nation.
Confronted with this dire situation, Jehoshaphat and his people were uncertain of their next steps, yet they chose to direct their focus towards God.
To fix your eyes on God means to acknowledge His greatness, believing that He surpasses even the most formidable of your challenges. As stated in Jeremiah 10:6, "No one is like you, LORD; you are great, and your name is mighty in power."
Fixing your eyes on God entails recognizing the Almighty's supremacy. There is nothing and no one that can rival His infinite power, as affirmed in Luke 1:37: "For with God nothing shall be impossible." Furthermore, Jeremiah 32:27 poses the question, "I am the Lord, the God of all mankind. Is anything too hard for me?" Your difficulties are not insurmountable for God; therefore, place your trust in Him.
To fix your eyes on God also involves acknowledging His Omniscience. God possesses complete knowledge of all things—past, present, and future. Psalm 147:5 proclaims, "Great is our Lord and mighty in power; his understanding has no limit."
Moreover, fixing your eyes on God signifies recognizing His love. As stated in John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life."
Additionally, to fix your eyes on God is to acknowledge His faithfulness. God remains true to Himself, His word, and His promises. As noted in 2 Thessalonians 3:3, "But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one."
Lastly, fixing your eyes on God means to contemplate His Eternity. God is eternal and embodies eternal life. He will always be present. Psalm 102:12 states, "But you, Lord, sit enthroned forever; your renown endures through all generations." Furthermore, Matthew 28:20 assures us, "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
Direct your focus towards God, acknowledging His sovereignty. God is indeed sovereign and acts according to His will. As stated in Psalm 115:3, "Our God is in heaven; He does whatever pleases Him." Furthermore, Psalm 103:19 affirms that "The Lord has established His throne in heaven, and His kingdom rules over all." If you desire to serve the Lord wholeheartedly and trust in His sovereignty, confront your challenges with the assurance that all things work together for the good of those who love God, as expressed in Romans 8:28. This verse reminds us that "in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose."
Consider the example of King Jehoshaphat, who was delivered in a remarkable manner because he focused his attention on God, leading to divine intervention on his behalf, as recounted in 2 Chronicles 20:17: "You will not have to fight this battle. Take up your positions; stand firm and see the deliverance the Lord will give you, Judah and Jerusalem. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. Go out to face them tomorrow, and the Lord will be with you."
If you seek God's assistance in your difficulties, shift your gaze towards Him rather than your problems. May the Lord be with you.
Amen.
